Oculomotor and Functional Vision Screening

Oculomotor and Functional Vision Screening

Oculomotor /Functional Vision Screening

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Overview

This brief screener takes under two minutes to administer and assesses six foundational oculomotor skills that are frequently missed by standard school vision screenings: fixation stability, smooth pursuits, horizontal saccades, vertical saccades, convergence, and functional scanning pattern.

Ages

The screener is valid across for clients 36 months and above.

How it fits your OT data

Functional vision skills sit at the base of Warren's Visual Perception Hierarchy — they are the prerequisite inputs that make visual motor integration and visual perceptual performance possible. When a child's VMI or VP scores are lower than expected, the Functional Vision Screener helps you determine whether oculomotor function should be investigated before attributing findings to a perceptual or motor deficit alone. Results are integrated into the OT Wizard AI report and generate referral language to a developmental optometrist when indicated.

The screener is administered directly from the OT Wizard screen — no additional materials required for most items.

As always, this screener is a clinical tool to support your professional judgment, not replace it.

How it works

Consider using this screener if a client presents with difficulty in reading, copying from the board, handwriting fluency, sustained near-point work, or tabletop task endurance. These are often attributed to attention or motor skill deficits when an underlying functional vision concern may be contributing.
